PrEP Services at Harrington Medical Clinic

At Harrington Medical Clinic, we are committed to providing comprehensive sexual health services, including Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV transmission. Our PrEP program is designed to offer personalized care, ensuring that individuals at higher risk of HIV exposure have access to effective prevention strategies.

๐Ÿ’Š Initial PrEP Consultation โ€“ โ‚ฌ160

Your first visit includes a thorough assessment and the following services:

  • Comprehensive Medical and Sexual Health History: Understanding your health background and sexual practices to tailor the most effective prevention strategy.
  • STI Screening: Blood tests, urine samples, and swabs to check for sexually transmitted infections.
  • Kidney Function Tests: Blood tests to assess kidney health, as PrEP can affect renal function in some individuals.
  • PrEP Education: Information on how PrEP works, its effectiveness, and how to take it correctly
  • PrEP Prescription: If deemed appropriate, a prescription for PrEP medication.

*Note: PrEP medication is available at your pharmacy. Please check with your local pharmacy for availability and pricing. Dispensing is free for eligible patients.

๐Ÿ”„ Follow-Up Appointments โ€“ โ‚ฌ100 (Every 3 Months or as Needed)

Regular follow-up visits are essential to ensure continued effectiveness and safety while on PrEP. Each session includes:

  • Updated Sexual Health History: Reviewing any changes in sexual practices or potential exposures.
  • STI Screening: Regular testing to detect any new infections.
  • Kidney Function Monitoring: Assessing renal health to detect any potential side effects early.
  • PrEP Prescription Renewal: Providing a new prescription if continuing with PrEP.

โœ… Eligibility for Free PrEP Medication

In Ireland, the Health Service Executive (HSE) provides free PrEP medication to individuals who meet certain criteria:

  • Gay men and other men who have sex with men who have had condomless anal sex in the last six months and expect to continue.
  • Trans women who have had condomless anal sex in the last six months and expect to continue.
  • Individuals having condomless sex with an HIV-positive partner who is not on treatment or has an undetectable viral load for less than six months.

๐Ÿง  How PrEP Works

PrEP involves taking a daily pill containing two antiretroviral medications: tenofovir and emtricitabine. These medications work by preventing the HIV virus from establishing an infection in the body. When taken consistently, PrEP can reduce the risk of contracting HIV from sex by more than 90% and from injection drug use by over 70%

โš ๏ธ Important Considerations

  • Regular Testing: HIV testing is required before starting PrEP and every three months thereafter.
  • Kidney Function Monitoring: Routine kidney function tests are necessary, as PrEP can affect renal health in some individuals.
  • STI Screening: Regular screening for sexually transmitted infections is recommended, as PrEP does not protect against other STIs
  • Adherence: Consistent daily intake of PrEP is crucial for its effectiveness.
