AMBULATORY BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORING

ABPM is the gold standard method of diagnosing high blood pressure. High blood pressure can be an asymptomatic condition afflicting damage for many years before being diagnosed and treated. It can lead to a number of ailments including heart disease and stroke. Previously an isolated blood pressure reading was the only means of diagnosing this condition. This method has now been superseded by ABPM. It involves wearing a monitor for 24 hours after which you return to the doctor who will download the readings and interpret the data to decide whether or not a patient has high blood pressure requiring treatment.

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE (STD) SCREENING AND TREATMENT

At Harrington Medical we offer comprehensive screening tests for STD’s. Our staff are appropriately trained and experienced in this area and will deal with you in a respectful sensitive manner. All consultations are highly confidential.

Aside from seeing patients with signs and symptoms of STDs, we carry out screening for asymptomatic patients who are concerned they may have a STD.

The test takes around 15-20 minutes. Following a discussion on symptoms/concerns/risks for a STD you will have an examination. You will then have bloods taken. A urine sample will also be collected in the surgery. Vaginal and penile swabs may also be required.

We test for HIV, Hepatitis, Syphilis, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. We also will examine for genital warts and herpes as appropriate.

You do not have to fast for your blood tests. You should not have passed urine for 3 hours prior to attending. For female patients you should not attend for screening during your period as it can affect your results.

Test results are available within five working days. You can phone for the results and treatment will be initiated by one of our doctors as required.

If you are diagnosed with a STD requiring further specialist intervention we will refer you to the appropriate specialist.

CRYOTHERAPY

Cryotherapy is a form of treatment for warts. It involves using liquid nitorgen to freeze and clear the warts. Each treatment takes less than one minute. Most warts require 1 to 4 treatments, with a 10 day interval between each treatment.

SEASONAL FLU VACCINATIONS

Harrington medical provides the annual flu vaccination for both individuals and companies. Flu vaccination season commences in September/October each year.

EAR SYRINGING

Ear wax is normally produced by our bodies to protect the skin of the ear canal. However, on occasion, a build up of wax can cause irritating symptoms such as reduced hearing, ringing noise (tinnitus) or pain. Ear syringing involves the removal of wax using a jet of warm water.
